On 15 July 2016, a coup d’état was attempted in Turkey against state institutions, including the government and President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan.

The attempt was carried out by a faction within the Turkish Armed Forces that organized themselves as the Peace at Home Council.

They attempted to seize control of several key places in Ankara, Istanbul, and elsewhere, but failed to do so after forces loyal to the state defeated them. The Council cited an erosion of secularism, elimination of democratic rule, disregard for human rights, and Turkey’s loss of credibility in the international arena as reasons for the coup.

The government accused the coup leaders of being linked to the Gülen movement, which is designated as a terrorist organization by the Republic of Turkey and led by Fethullah Gülen, a Turkish businessman and cleric who lives in Pennsylvania.

The first direct gas pipeline between Russia and Turkey was the Blue Stream, commissioned in 2005. In 2009, Putin proposed a Blue Stream II line parallel to Blue Stream under the Black Sea. The Blue Stream II project did not carry through and the South Stream project took the lead, until it was abandoned in 2014.

In November 2015, after the Russian Sukhoi Su-24 shootdown, Russia’s Economic Development Minister stated that the TurkStream gas pipeline project falls under the restrictive measures against Turkey. Talks on the project were unilaterally suspended by the Russian side.

On 5 December 2015, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan said Turkey terminated the TurkStream project, on the grounds of Russian “non-compliance” with Turkish demands surrounding the project. In late July 2016, following a reconciliation meeting in Moscow, both sides brought the project back on table.

On 10 October 2016, Russia and Turkey officially signed the intergovernmental agreement in Istanbul, confirming commitment in the execution of the project.

TURKEY’S President Recep Tayyip Erdogan and his ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) have announced they want to create an “army of Islam” to wage war against Israel, it has been revealed.

Less than a month ago the Turkish state’s mouthpiece the daily Yeni Şafak ran an article for Erdogan titled “A call for urgent action” and on the newspaper’s website headlined “What if an army of Islam formed against Israel?”

It called for the 57 member states of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to form a joint army to simultaneously attack Israel from all sides.

The article said: “If the member states of the OIC unite militarily, they will form the world’s largest and most comprehensive army.

“The number of active soldiers would be at least 5,206,100, while the defence budget would reach approximately $175billion (£124billion).”

This was accompanied by an interactive map providing formation of military forces for a joint Muslim attack on Israel.

U.S. President Donald Trump said on Friday he had authorized higher tariffs on imports from Turkey, imposing a 20 percent duty on aluminum and 50 percent one on steel, as tensions mount between the two NATO allies over Ankara’s detention of an evangelical pastor and other diplomatic issues.

WASHINGTON — President Trump said on Friday that he would double the rate of tariffs on steel and aluminum imports from Turkey, inflicting additional pain on President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose country is in the midst of an economic crisis.

Mr. Trump’s abrupt and unilateral action came amid worsening relations with Turkey, which has continued to detain an American pastor on espionage charges despite the United States’ insistence that he be released.

Recep Tayyip Erdoğan tried to restore confidence in the Turkish lira after it plunged by more than 20% against the dollar on Friday. The sudden drop came when Donald Trump announced on Twitter he was doubling US import tariffs on Turkish steel and aluminium. The Turkish president called on Turks to exchange dollars, euros and gold for Turkish lira. He said this would be Turkey’s response ‘to those who wage economic war against us’. The lira has been under sustained pressure on foreign exchanges, dropping by almost 50% against the dollar in the past 12 months.

The slide comes as Turkey and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan have thus far failed to stem a dramatic decline in its currency, which came to a head on Friday, and accelerated, as President Donald Trump tweeted that he had authorized the doubling of steel and aluminum tariffs on the country.

Turkey’s lira was trading at fresh all-time low against the U.S. dollar, after shedding some 14% of its value at the end of last week. The Turkish lira USDTRY, -7.4892% is down more than 6% on Monday after Turkey’s central bank pledged to provide “all the liquidity the banks need” in a statement Monday.

It also said banks would be able to borrow currency deposits from the central bank at a one-month maturity and one-week maturities. Analysts said Turkey’s reluctance to raise interest rates stood out.

According to the country’s Official Gazette, the decree signed by Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, raised the levy on passenger cars by 120 percent, on alcoholic drinks by 140 percent and on leaf tobacco by 60 percent. Tariffs were also increased on goods including cosmetics, rice and coal.

On Tuesday, Erdogan said his government would boycott electronic goods from the United States in response to Washington imposing tariffs on Turkish imports. He pledged Turkey would work to produce and export more goods, as well as provide employment opportunities to Turkish citizens

Turkey’s beleagured currency has bounced back from record lows after Qatar pledged to shore up the banking sector’s shaky finances with loans worth $15bn (£11.8bn).

A week after a diplomatic spat with the US sent the lira into a tailspin, the agreement with Qatar was calculated to help Turkey avoid having to ask the International Monetary Fund for emergency funding.

Officials in Ankara said the Qatari money would be “channeled into Turkey’s financial markets and banks”, with the implication that the investment would be enough to head off a banking collapse.

The highly-publicised collapse in the Turkish lira may have been a disaster for the country – and any British expat who bought there in the last two years – but it has been described as a bonanza for those holding US dollars, pounds or euros.

In August 2017, a pound bought 4.5 lira, before it started a steady decline over the year, slumping to 6.3 lira by mid-June. But at the height of the currency’s troubles last week, it was trading at just under 9 lira to the pound, meaning property had effectively almost halved in price in hard currency terms compared with a year ago.
